Design Your Kid’s Nursery (up to 5 years)

The nursery needs to fulfill many functions — it needs to be lively yet soothing, engaging yet functional. Plus, you need to anticipate your child’s future needs. When there are so many boxes to check, it can get overwhelming. These design ideas should make it a little more fun.

1. Flexible elements that grow with your child

Infants and toddlers grow rapidly, and the growth is accompanied by many transitions. Instead of having to buy new furniture and décor, opt for pieces that are adaptable and classic. For example, you can now get cribs that transition into a toddler bed. A well made dresser or a built-in closet, too, can last a lifetime.

2. Open floor space

Ample floor time is crucial for children this age. Some open space in the room will give them room to move around, explore play or even nap. But to prevent any mishaps, padded flooring would be the right choice. You may opt for carpeted floors or add thick yet soft area rugs. Either way, opt for materials that are easy to clean and maintain, such as machine washable rugs.

3. Toddler sized furniture

A great way to make the room child-friendly is to incorporate a few child-sized pieces. A tiny reading chair or a table set is a good start. A low table for art and crafts is another great option. Having such accessibility will make them more confident and independent.

4. Stimulating elements

Children in this age group are constantly observing and absorbing their surroundings. An environment that is sufficiently stimulating can be a huge aid in their development. Use colors and patterns as visual elements. Since babies spend a lot of time on their backs, turn the ceiling into an accent wall with patterned wallpaper, murals or false ceiling designs.

Introduce them to new texture and add interesting pieces to the design with textiles, wall treatments, etc. Turn the nursery into a sanctuary by incorporating a sound machine which can play music, white noise, etc., and help soothe the child.

5. Storage, storage and more storage

Toys, clothes, diapers, books and more toys! The list of things a baby needs is never-ending. Clever storage is always a welcome addition. Utilize the vertical space and the awkward crannies by installing open shelving or book ledges. Turn them into display-cum-storage with books, plushies, figurines, etc. Maximize the closet with second rails, shelf dividers, hanging organizers, etc.

6. Themed rooms

Themed rooms when done right can be mesmerizing and playful. But it can often feel dated or restrictive. One way to find the balance is to limit the trendy or themed elements to accents. For example, accessories, peel and stick wallpaper, some textile, and so on. In the case of color palette, lighting, furniture choose more classic options such as pastels, earth tones, wood finish, metal accents, etc.

7. Safety and control measures

Controlling the light, temperature and sound in the nursery will help you maintain your child’s sleep schedule and create a relaxing atmosphere. Blinds, shutters, heavy curtains will allow you to block daylight when needed. Thick rugs, carpeting and drapes absorb external noise. When it comes to child-proofing the room, opt for soft and cozy textiles, avoid rough edges, minimize pieces that need to be hung, etc.
